Jobs for High-Functioning Asperger's

Asperger’s is actually no longer its own specific diagnosis. It is part of a wider condition called ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Generally, though, this term is still used, even by doctors, to describe a form of autism where intelligence is not impacted, and people are able to function in academia at a high level, but social situations tend to be more difficult for them. Jobs for high-functioning Asperger’s reflect and accommodate this.

Potential Symptoms of High-Functioning Asperger’s

People experience this condition in their own unique way. However, there are some potential symptoms that may be experienced by people with high-functioning Asperger’s. These include:

  • Difficulty understanding and interpreting social cues
  • Problems with making and maintaining eye contact
  • A need for routine and a dislike of change
  • An intense interest in one or two topics and potential obsession with those topics
  • Being clumsy or having poor motor skills
  • Difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication

Employers Should Help High-Functioning Asperger’s Employees Succeed

People with Asperger’s have a lot to offer. In the UK, employers are bound by law to respect peoples’ conditions and to make allowances and adjustments if they can.

An employer of someone with high-functioning Asperger’s can do a few things you can do to help autistic employees succeed in their position. This includes:

  • Creating a structured working day so the individual can thrive based on routine.
  • Being as flexible as possible and allowing the individual to take breaks when they need to.
  • Allowing the individual to work from home if needed.
  • Making sure the working environment is quiet and free of distractions.
  • Providing clear instructions and guidelines for tasks, with plenty of time for the individual to ask questions.
  • Encouraging socialisation with other employees, as long as it does not cause too much anxiety for the individual. Ensure they can avoid social interactions if they need to.

Good Jobs For People With Asperger’s

Some studies suggest that people with Asperger’s tend to be drawn to certain types of work including science and engineering. It is generally thought that the traits of the condition lead people toward these interesting technical jobs, but people with forms of ASD can work in whichever field they wish with the right support.

Examples of jobs for high-functioning Asperger’s can include:

  • Engineering. A lot of people with ASD like to figure out how things work. Jobs in this field can require a lot of attention to detail and focus.
  • Computer programming. Jobs that require problem-solving and paying close attention to detail are often good for those with Asperger’s.
  • Science. People with ASD often have intense interests in specific topics and science allows them to explore these interests in depth.
  • Creative arts such as painting, sculpting, and photography. These jobs allow people with ASD to express themselves.

These are just a few examples. If you have high-functioning Asperger’s then you should focus on the things you are passionate about rather than being led by stereotypes of autistic adults. People with high functioning autism have unique interests and skills like everybody else.
