Accessible Jobs for Disabled People
Disabled people face many challenges when it comes to finding the right job. In fact, we are still facing a significant employment gap between disabled and non-disabled people in the U.K., with disabled people being consistently underemployed in all sectors.
To help close this gap, it is key that there are accessible jobs on the market for disabled people. Many jobs are inaccessible without realising, and some are intentionally inaccessible. This inaccessibility can include anything right from inaccessible application forms to physical building inaccessibility. To cut a long story short, many employers and companies cut disabled people out of working for them in a vast range of ways.
On this page, we are going to tell you more about accessible jobs for disabled people and where to find them.
What are Accessible Jobs?
Accessible jobs allow a wide range of disabled people to be included and supported. They offer equitable support and change that is able to counteract any barriers the disabled person may typically have to get such a job. Accessible jobs consider things like:
- Physical accessibility: lifts, parking, seating arrangements, bathroom facilities, etc
- Accessibility of all written and verbal communication
- The accessibility and inclusivity of the overall working environment
- Attitudes of staff towards disability
- The bias of people making recruitment decisions
- Reasonable adjustments
- Disability-awareness training
- Protection against discrimination
A lot goes into building a truly accessible job, and that is why it takes a disability-positive employer to pull it off.
Accessible Employers
There are many inaccessible employers in the U.K., unfortunately. Those who do not consider or respect the needs of disabled people. However, there is also a growing community of accessible employers who do care about the opportunities they offer disabled people across the country.
These employers are signed up for the Disability Confident scheme provided by the government. This is a tiered scheme that allows employers to enter different levels of commitment to being a disability-friendly employer. Being part of this scheme is a great sign that the employer is accessible and inclusive in the way the disabled community needs them to be.
If you want to find such an employer, you can do so with us at Careers with Disabilities on our disability-friendly job board.
We only post opportunities from Disability-Confident employers who are willing and able to offer disabled job seekers the right treatment.
If you are open to a new job opportunity, check out what we have and take a look through our support for disabled job seekers too.
