Jobs with Reasonable Adjustments

When you are disabled at work, there are lots of things you need to consider. One of the most important things you need at work is appropriate and adequate reasonable adjustments. These adjustments are critical to making sure that you can do the job you want without being disadvantaged.

Jobs with reasonable adjustments allow disabled people to work on an even keel with their non-disabled counterparts. They make working easier, safer, and more manageable for disabled people with a varied range of disabilities and health conditions. This is a critical part of closing the disability employment gap we currently have in the U.K.

At Careers with Disabilities, we are firm believers in disabled people having everything they need to thrive at work. We want to help make sure disabled job seekers and employees have everything they need at work, whatever that may be. So, if you are someone looking for a job with reasonable adjustments, you have landed in the right place.

Let’s talk more about what they are and where to find them.

What are Reasonable Adjustments?

Reasonable adjustments are legally required under the Equality Act of 2010 for all disabled employees. They refer to changes, modifications and additions that are made by employers to support their disabled members of staff. These vary greatly from employee to employee and depend on what is most suitable for that person’s individual needs. They can include options such as:

  • Flexible and hybrid working options
  • Remote work
  • Physical accessibility changes, such as extra equipment and seating changes
  • Physical accessibility amenities such as disability-friendly toilets and disabled parking
  • Disability Related Leave
  • Time off for appointments and treatment
  • Exemption from certain tasks or events
  • Paid transport

These reasonable adjustments must be made for disabled employees when they are requested and when they are reasonable and feasible for the employer to provide. If an employer is having financial difficulties providing such adjustments, they can call on support from schemes such as Access to Work to make sure employees get what they need.

The objective of providing reasonable adjustments is to provide disabled people with fair employment opportunities and to ensure these opportunities are sustainable for them. Disabled people deserve the extra support they need at work. If an employer isn’t supplying this, it could be a case for workplace disability discrimination which is an illegal offence.

At the very least, it could be a sign to find yourself a new job with a new employer who will make the changes you need at work.
