Jobs for People with Long Covid

Long covid is a condition in which people suffer chronic and long-term symptoms as a result of being infected with the covid-19 virus. After having covid-19 initially, people can develop a range of long-term symptoms that include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Memory problems
  • Joint pain
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety

It is not yet known why certain people get long covid and others recover without chronic symptoms. The covid virus is still something relatively new in the field of medicine and medical research, and so we still have a long way to go to catch up with knowledge and solutions.

Right now, there are no specific treatments for long-covid. People may take over-the-counter remedies such as painkillers, anti-depressants, and anti-inflammatories to deal with the symptoms, however, there is no specific cure or treatment dedicated to long covid.

How Long Covid Can Affect Work

All of the symptoms of long covid can affect a person’s ability to attend work and perform their normal duties. They may also feel particularly stressed or down by the fact that not everyone will recognise long covid as a genuine illness and some people may have an exclusionary attitude towards people dealing with it.

Living with long covid may cause some people to feel that they need to leave work altogether. The symptoms of pain, fatigue, confusion, low mood, and more, can make work seem daunting and even impossible. Some people may feel forced to leave jobs they have been in for years due to covid complications. Other people may acquire a lot of absences as they try to manage the condition.

Due to this, it is best for people with long covid to work for an employer who will understand that they need (and deserve) some extra support. Working for someone compassionate and Disability-Confident can make a transformative difference in how people with long covid approach work and how they feel about their job.

Working with the right employer can be the difference between leaving work and having financial difficulties on top of health concerns, or managing to stay in work while managing the condition. A good, disability-friendly employer will be able to offer reasonable adjustments and responsive support that allows this latter option to happen.
