Jobs with Disabled Parking
The accessible facilities of a workplace are hugely significant. Whether a place of employment is created accessibly, or not, has a direct impact on how disabled people can and will interact with said place.
If a workplace is inaccessible and lacks certain critical facilities, disabled people will be, intentionally or not, excluded from working there. If they do work there, they may be unhappy, stressed, and routinely inconvenienced.
It is important that employers across the U.K. are aware of what facilities and provisions they need in order to be truly accessible. It is also important that employees and potential employees who are disabled know where to find jobs and employers that do care about such issues of accessibility at work.
At Careers with Disabilities, we care about supporting both sides of this coin. We have guidance for employers on how to become accessible and inclusive and we also have plenty of content and resources to help disabled job seekers find the jobs and employers they really want. On this page, we are going to discuss disabled parking a bit more and how job seekers can find jobs with this critical facility.
Why Does Disabled Parking Matter?
Despite stereotypes and misconceptions, many disabled people drive. Many disabled people drive cars that are adapted to their specific needs and they use these cars to drive to work. However, lots of car parks across the U.K. have minimal or no car parking spaces that are suited to these cars. They are also frequently not suited to the space disabled people need to exit their vehicles due to mobility needs and equipment they may have.
Not having a parking space at work while the rest of your colleagues do is extremely unfair. It can easily make disabled employees feel excluded and undermined. It can also logistically make their day more difficult. Both of which are not appropriate results from an employer’s actions, or lack of action.
Disabled parking is critical and it must be provided wherever physically possible. If you want to read more about your rights at work under employment law, please do via our blog on the Equality Act for disabled employees. You may be able to legally request that your workplace implements disabled parking, which can be paid for via the Access to Work scheme if appropriate.
