Jobs with Disability-Friendly Employers
Finding a job as a disabled job seeker isn’t always easy. Many disabled people have experienced discrimination in both recruitment processes and the workplace itself throughout their lives. As such, it can be difficult to start again somewhere new.
Many disabled people will be worried about the suitability of jobs and how they will be treated by employers. Unfortunately, a lot of these worries will have been valid in the past and this will have reinforced the anxiety around finding a new job for fear of it happening again.
For disabled people to find a job opportunity that is positive and restorative, it is key to look at the employer involved. Going with the wrong employer can help this negative cycle to continue, with further bias, exclusion, and discrimination taking place. On the other hand, going with the right kind of employer can put a stop to such negativity and allow disabled job seekers to find the best possible working environment for them.
On this page, we are going to talk more about how to find such disability-friendly employers and reap these aforementioned benefits.
What are “Disability-Friendly” Employers?
Disability-friendly employers are those who consider the needs of disabled employees and who put structures of support in place to help them throughout their careers. They:
- Conduct inclusive and accessible recruitment processes. Ensuring that disabled candidates have a fair opportunity for each job they advertise.
- Take and run disability-awareness training to educate themselves and others on important issues surrounding disability at work.
- Learn as much as they can about individual disabilities and peoples’ experiences with them, using resources such as our Disability Advice Hub.
- Enrol for the Disability Confident Scheme and advertise their status to the general public.
- Tackle their own unconscious bias towards disabled people and work on rooting out bias throughout their own workforce.
- Have strong policies around discrimination and protect their disabled employees from all forms of discrimination in the workplace.
For disabled people, finding an employer who meets all of these criteria will result in a much better work experience. Such an experience can allow disabled employees to be happier in their jobs and keep their jobs for much longer, leading to sustainable financial security and general well-being.
