What is a Disability Assessor?

A disability assessor is a healthcare professional who checks if someone with a disability can qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which helps financially. They do their work via home health visits.

Their job is to see if you can work, move around easily, and allocate resources like crutches to make life easier. They’re responsible for writing detailed and accurate reports of each of their patients since their decisions can have a massive effect on someone’s life.

What better person for the job than someone who has a disability themselves? Your knowledge and understanding of life with a disability can be a highly valuable asset in this role.

How to Become a Disability Assessor

As disability assessors are healthcare professionals, it’s first necessary to complete a Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field. This may include nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy or social work.

It may also be possible to enter this line of work without a degree. However, you’ll need to have extensive relevant work experience. Only certain employers will accept candidates without a degree so you’ll need to do your research.

On completion of a relevant degree, you’ll also need to attend specific training and certification programmes to become a disability assessor. These are generally a mix of classroom learning and on-the-job training, much like an apprenticeship.

Finally, you’ll need to register with a relevant professional body to practice as a disability assessor. The Health and Care Professions Council or the Nursing and Midwifery Council are two options where you can register. Before doing so, consult with your prospective employer to see which form of registration they require.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

To give you a better idea of what your day-to-day life will be like as a disability assessor, we’ve outlined some of the common daily tasks you can expect to carry out.

They include:

  • Conducting in-person assessments: you’ll evaluate individuals applying for PIP benefits and support, assessing their medical conditions and determining their eligibility.
  • Preparing comprehensive reports: once you’ve done your assessment, you’ll create detailed reports outlining individuals’ medical conditions, the impact of their disability on daily life, and their eligibility for benefits and support.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge: you’ll keep learning about the latest rules for benefits and support so you can give the most accurate information and provide the best support.
