Flexible Jobs for People with ADHD

There are estimated to be around 2.6 million people with ADHD in the U.K. It is a neurological condition that we are learning more about. One aspect that we are particularly learning about is that of the relationship between ADHD and adult work.

People with ADHD can be greatly affected by the condition at work. As such, many people with the condition feel that they won’t be able to find a job that will suit them or that they will be able to keep long-term.

We believe that awareness and education around all conditions and disabilities help us all thrive at work. On this page, we are going to try to help this cause by writing about flexible jobs for people with ADHD, why they work and how you can find them.

Why are Flexible Jobs Good for People with ADHD?

There are many different symptoms of ADHD that people experience on a spectrum. This means that one person’s experience with ADHD is very different from that of another’s. However, some commonly seen symptoms of the condition include:

  • Difficulties with concentration and attention
  • Fatigue and brain fog
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty with mood regulation
  • Anxiety
  • Trouble sticking to deadlines
  • Different capabilities with different modes of communication, e.g. audio information

These kinds of symptoms can be disruptive to work and they can cause a lot of work-based stress and anxiety.

Having flexible working hours, flexible working conditions, and hybrid approaches to work can all be hugely beneficial in managing these symptoms. When someone is able to work in a flexible way, it means they can tailor their hours and output to their own working styles and ability. Not being shoved into a box helps people with ADHD play to their strengths rather than their weaknesses.

Flexible work can help people with ADHD thrive at work, where they previously might have felt stifled, overwhelmed, and under pressure.

Luckily, after the Covid-19 pandemic, we are seeing more and more flexible and hybrid approaches to work becoming available. This is a great thing for people with disabilities and diversity, so long may it continue.
