Jobs with Accessible Bathrooms

Physical accessibility, or lack thereof, in a workplace, is hugely important for disabled people. Having to deal with inaccessibility at work is stressful and puts disabled employees at a disadvantage. It is also a factor that contributes to the employment gap between disabled and non-disabled people.

To provide a truly accessible working environment, employers must put the right priority on accessible bathrooms. Many people with many different types of conditions, illnesses, and disabilities require accessible bathrooms in order to be fully comfortable at work. For many people, this can be a make or break for them and a potential job.

With that in mind, on this page, we are going to talk a little more about jobs with accessible bathrooms and where to find them.

Who Needs Accessible Bathrooms?

It is a common misconception that only wheelchair users require accessible bathrooms. There are many disabilities that call for accessible bathroom use including:

And more.

Many people require accessible bathrooms due to their disabilities. Often, these disabilities are invisible. As such, accessible bathrooms ideally should be offered without question and without the need to be specifically requested. Having inclusive bathroom facilities pre-existing in a workplace can allow a wide range of disabled employees to feel comfortable at work without having to disclose their needs to their employees and/or have conversations around their toilet use that they would rather not have.

Accessible toilets make life at work a lot easier for many people. In fact, they can be legally enforced if an employer does not already provide them. Installing new facilities for disabled people is essential where physically possible. If there are financial issues, schemes such as Access to Work can help employers make the necessary changes.

Where to Find Physically Accessible Jobs

Most disabled people would like to step into a job and working environment that is already accessible for their needs without difficult conversations and negotiations. As such, finding jobs with accessible bathrooms is a big plus.

The best way to find a job that will have a physically accessible environment is to find an employer who is disability-friendly and Disability-Confident. These employers will already consider and cater for disabled employees as a bare minimum requirement, so you will have to do much less worrying about what will be available for you when you get there.
