Workshop Mechanic – Environmental Services
Location: Richmond, TW2
Permanent – 45 hours per week
Salary: Up to £36,000
Our waste and recycling services enable local authorities to deliver reliable waste management services, with over 200,000 tons of waste recycled every year. And one of the most important parts of the team our are vehicle mechanics, who ensure that our HGV refuse trucks and street cleansing vehicles can keep our community clean, green and safe for all residents and businesses.
Joining our friendly team as a mechanic will see you finding and fixing electrical and hydraulic faults in these vehicles, along with carrying out general chassis service work. They might not be the most glamorous vehicles, but you’ll go home each day knowing you’ll have contributed to your local community.
You won’t be doing this alone either. Our team is made up of professional and supportive teammates, including managers who began their careers with Serco as mechanics and have worked their way up to Supervisor, Fleet Manager and Regional Manager positions.
As such, we are dedicated to the ongoing development and progression of our mechanic teams, with outstanding training along opportunities to undertake additional qualifications, including Transport Manager CPC, HGV Driver training, IOSSH training and Irtec accreditation.
We will support you in realising your career goals within Serco.
First and foremost, you’ll need to be an experienced and fully qualified mechanic – either with HGV mechanic experience, or willing to undertake additional training to upskill.
We are always keen to hear from candidates from the armed forces with mechanical backgrounds, or individuals currently working as car mechanics to maintain our fleet of approximately 90 Class 2, 7.5T, transits and 4×4 vehicles.
To be successful in the role, we require that candidates have electrical and hydraulic fault-finding experience, the ability to carry out general chassis service work, and Full industry recognised qualifications (City & Guilds / NVQ Level Three in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair).
You should have good written and verbal communication skills, be able to undertake all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair, and general welding skills would be advantageous.
At times you may be required to go off site to attend to vehicles that have broken down, so it is essential that you hold a full UK driving licence.
Meaningful and vital work: Working within Environmental Services at Serco means that you’ll play a critical role in ensuring that the communities we serve receive reliable waste management services.
A world of opportunity: It takes a diverse team to support our Environmental Services and we’re big on internal progression. So whether you specialise your skills, undertake additional training or progress into senior management you’ll find all the opportunity you need to evolve your career.
Great people: Our staff are dedicated to providing the best possible service for our customers and we welcome those who take similar pride in their work.
