Hampshire County Council is looking for an experienced ecologist to temporarily join their highly regarded Ecology Team
This role gives an innovative and enthusiastic professional ecologist an opportunity to take a leading role in ensuring development within Hampshire meets the highest standard and contributes to the conservation of biodiversity. You will take a lead in the planning functions and development schemes of the County Council and other public sector organisations whilst maintaining the work/life balance you have always wanted. This would suit someone seeking a sabbatical or those seeking experience in this sector to learn and develop skills linked with working within local authority to improve their range of competencies.
You will use your specialist knowledge to provide advice to the County Council and other Local Planning Authorities on ecological matters. This will primarily entail the review of ecological reports and other documents submitted for planning. The role will also require you to undertake ecological assessments (including desk- and field-based assessments, Environmental Statements and Habitats Regulations Assessments), work with clients and applicants to design innovative solutions to mitigate ecological impacts and ensure that ecological enhancements are embedded within development schemes. The role also includes responsibility for providing expert advice to the County Council and district/borough planning authorities on planning applications and local plan work.
You should have an appropriate degree/professional qualification and relevant experience, including demonstrable expertise in survey design and programming, ecological impact assessment and mitigation strategies. A confident understanding of planning process and environmental legislation is essential.
You will play a key role in the Economy, Transport and Environment department. Whilst this role is predominately office based (Winchester, Hampshire) you may be expected to attend some external meetings at other locations. All Hampshire County Council Staff are following current government guidelines around homeworking where possible. It is intended that when it is safe to do so, we will return to a blend of office and homeworking in the future.
