The Met Office is recruiting for a Senior Communications Executive based nominally in Exeter.

As our Senior Communications Executive, the starting salary will be £30932.00 with opportunities to progress to £33925.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

Our total reward package is potentially worth up to £44036.00 per annum, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus, employer pension contributions.

Job Purpose

The Senior Communications Executive sits within the Communications and Engagement function within the People Directorate. The role sits within the Media and Campaigns Team under the Head of Media and Campaigns.

The Senior Communications Executive has a key role to play in leading and developing effective communications campaigns, including targeted campaigns for specialist sectors and programmes.

The post holder helps to enhance the Met Office’s external reputation and contributes to increased awareness revenue, customer recruitment and retention.

As our Senior Communications Executive , the key duties are:

  • Plan and coordinate effective and integrated communications campaigns and annual sector plans, including delivery of day-to-day weather information, to increase Met Office revenue and reach and promote and protect organisational reputation, in support of the Comms and Engagement strategy, and in collaboration with marketing and communications colleagues.
  • Act as a communications consultant for specialist programmes (such as PWS, Government business or science) to achieve maximum impact and profile of the Met Office brand, to increase revenue and customer recruitment and retention
  • Co-ordinate and direct internal and external resources to deliver high quality communications and partnership campaigns aligned to business and programme targets and objectives, and provide campaign evaluations.
  • Deliver innovative and targeted communications activities to maximise profile of Met Office brand, products and services, supporting corporate campaigns as required. Provide evaluation and measurement of communications activities. 
  • Continuously develop communications skills and knowledge and improve our service to internal and external audiences. Identify new beneficial communications approaches for the Met Office – ensure meeting professional standards.
  • Manage, and deliver special projects, such as be a social media channel expert or support contracts with external suppliers.
  • Manage and provide service communications toolkits and templates.
  • Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

    Essential Criteria

  • Experience of working in a Marketing and Communications environment and ideally business or marketing related degree or other suitable qualification (CIM, CIPR).
  • Demonstrable experience in developing targeted communications plans which support corporate goals.
  • Demonstrable experience of successful communications project or campaign management and delivery, meeting challenging targets and using a number of communications channels.
  • Confidence and ability to convince others of a course of action, even when it is not the obvious one, using appropriate challenge.
  • Ability to prioritise and juggle multiple projects without losing focus, leading external and internal resources to meet challenging deadlines.
  • An ability to write creatively and convincingly.
  • Strong teamwork skills and flexibility in approach to work. Experience of latest communications techniques including online and social media.
  • Experience of delivering complex science or technical communications to a non-scientific audience.

  • An eye for design, attention to detail and creative flair.
