We have an exciting opportunity for a Publicist to join the BBC Studios Communications team in a role which will span production and brands, as well as consumer products and licensing. The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting content across the BBC Studios Productions’ pipeline including genres such as Factual Entertainment, Documentaries, Entertainment and Music and more – as well as the hero brand, Doctor Who. Working with production and brands teams and Public Service counterparts to deliver impactful comms in the lead up to and during transmission of Doctor Who, they will also be responsible for Doctor Who consumer products and licensing comms.

You must be passionate about TV, with impressive publicity contacts, strong stakeholder management and crisis comms experience. Creativity will also sit at the heart of everything you do.

Role Responsibility

Responsible for BBC Studios Doctor Who production and brands comms, working closely with stakeholders and talent to deliver impactful campaigns to support the transmission of the show.

Responsible for Doctor Who consumer products and licensing comms activity. Work closely with licensees to deliver compelling and ambitious trade and consumer communications and publicity campaigns, interviews, launches, and stunts across priority products, including DVD/EST, events, and licensed products.

Establish strong working relationships with key licensees and oversee licensee comms to ensure collaboration and protection of BBC Studios’ brands and content.

Work across a number of genres in the productions and brands communication team to deliver high-level communications strategies and campaigns.

Anticipate and manage issues with potentially negative impact; handling reactive issues as required, and draft LAEs and briefing notes.

Deliver appropriate and ambitious profile-raising for key executives and stakeholders (including speaker ops, interviews, and innovative opportunities), ensure stakeholders and execs are suitably prepped for interviews and events.

Establish and maintain a network of contacts with the licensing trade media, national and regional newspapers and magazines, websites, TV, radio and online outlets, external PR agencies, and celebrity bookers.

Evaluate work, collecting and examining evidence to assess the impact of communications work, and distribute lessons to the wider team.

Generate innovative ways of increasing favourable media coverage and raising the profile of specific brands.

Write clear, concise media information for brands, products, and content.

Coordinates press conferences/screenings/launches and briefings/previews, handling requests for interviews and when needed, face-to-face audience engagement/activity (audience facing events/activity).

Generate assets for use online and in social media.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Proven record working in publicity and specifically entertainment brands
  • Knowledge of licensing trade press and events.
  • Good understanding of the media environment (including social media) and the newsgathering process across radio, television, print, and online.
  • Excellent news sense with the ability to write, clear and lively copy, which stimulates both the media and public interest.
  • Excellent and proven creativity in campaigns and the ability to work autonomously on projects.
  • Superb interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain credibility and effective working relationships with a wide range of contacts at different levels.
  • Excellent media contacts and knowledge and understanding of online/social media opportunities for a publicity campaign.
  • Proven organisational and planning skills – managing multiple campaigns, organising and delivering events, managing crises.
  • Ability to respond to issues and write lines against enquiry (working with comms manager) in a timely manner while ensuring all relevant stakeholders are briefed.
  • Strong social media skills
  • Experience in television/entertainment publicity and an understanding and working knowledge of the broadcasting industry will be very advantageous
