We have a unique requirement for a Principal Engineer to join our flourishing In-House Design and Delivery team focussing on clean water schemes throughout the Wessex Water region.

This is a real opportunity to not only further challenge and expand your design and build experience on clean water schemes. You’ll also have the opportunity to build up a dynamic team of Engineers to deliver on the companies’ commitments to providing a safe and clean water service through to our customers.

What will you be doing?

Working within this strategic position within E&SD (Engineering and Sustainable Delivery), your role will be to primarily take ownership for leading all technical elements of the design activities being undertaken by the multi-disciplinary project delivery team, which will comprise in-house designers, external consultants and technical specialists, contractors and representatives of WW Operations.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • take the lead responsibility for design throughout the outline design, detailed design and construction support stages
  • act as mentor to the more junior members of the team and instil a can-do culture within the team to support cost-effective delivery and personal development
  • support the Project Manager with the preparation and agreement of fee proposals, programmes and the general management of resources to ensure the design team delivers in line with the agreed financial approvals and programme
  • ensure that the proposed design solutions are sustainable and can be delivered safely and cost-effectively to provide the company with the right solution for the best value, especially on a whole life cost basis
  • review, audit and approve all technical reports, appraisals, designs and drawings to ensure they comply with Wessex Water health and safety and technical standards, while meeting legal and environmental obligations
  • arrange and chair workshops and regular design meetings to review design proposals, progress and to consider issues such as buildability, commissioning, HAZOPs, Control Philosophy and URS reviews
  • What are the requirements?

To really hit the ground running in this role, you’ll be a chartered Engineer (MICE or a similar professional institution), as well as having at least 10 years’ experience in a design role with a background in water treatment, wastewater and sewerage projects.

Equally important is your people (line) management and communication experience. You need to be an inspirational leader for the team; challenging ways of working while maintaining delivery excellence across a large number of projects. You’ll also be engaging with a wide range of senior internal and external stakeholders, so you need to demonstrate your influencing ability too.
