England Golf is the national governing body for amateur golf in England, and we are looking to recruit a Senior Independent Director (SID), who will be one of the three independent non-executive directors in the 12-person Board. The vacancy arises due to Martha Brass stepping down from her Senior Independent Director (SID) role as she is taking on a fulltime senior executive role with BBC Studios.
England Golf are a non-profit organisation, dedicated to growing the game of golf, and our work is solely to develop and promote the game. The Board carries out the normal functions of the directors of a company, for the benefit of its members, in our case the mostly County golf organisations who represent their member golf clubs and their member golfers. The appointed Chair and another independent director work with the Chief Executive and eight directors elected by the membership, overseeing the work of a dedicated executive team.
We have recently re-set our strategy to focus on widening golf’s appeal, highlighting our sport as more inclusive and accessible than ever. Our sets this updated strategy out in detail.
The role of the Senior Independent Director (SID) is part-time and on a voluntary basis. Our Board meet approximately 5 times each year, with 3 General Meetings of the members as well as other ad hoc meetings (which can be virtual as well as in person). We are based in Woodhall Spa, at our very own National Golf Centre. You may be asked to sit on other Board committees as required. England Golf reimburse reasonable out of pocket expenses.
The SID is a sounding board for the Chair and Board colleagues on key governance matters and acts as an intermediary for directors and between the Chair and CEO as and when necessary, requiring demonstrated ability to manage relationships at a senior level and to facilitate open discussion to reach consensus. An interest and experience in the game, from playing to volunteering, will be an advantage, although not to the degree that this would create a lack of independence. We would also look for an understanding of the workings of sport governing bodies in the UK, or other major sports and leisure areas of British life. An open mindset will be very important. We are interested in people with different skills, experiences and backgrounds to the current Board Directors and we welcome applications from under-represented groups. We are also interested in applicants with knowledge and experience in digital engagement and community, membership and subscriber building, and marketing, particular in working with brands and businesses to drive interest in new groups.
To apply, please upload your CV and covering letter as ONE file via the ‘Apply’ button, explaining your experience, skill and knowledge and what it would bring to the role. We are committed to equality of opportunity and are a Disability Confident employer.
