The Role

We are a friendly and welcoming small animal & exotics practice in Hatfield, Herts looking for a full time Registered Veterinary Nurse to become our new Head Nurse. Your day to day role will involve normal nursing duties, including clinical work such as blood sampling, anaesthesia, assisting with procedures, caring for in patients and general nursing care, as well as nurse consults, which include post op checks, weight clinics and anti-parasite treatment visits among others. We would like you to be or become a Clinical Coach with responsibility for supporting and training our SVNs. You will also be expected to be responsible for managerial tasks such as overseeing the lab and clinical equipment maintenance, ordering stock, organising the rota and managing the nurse and reception teams as well as some general administrative duties as part of the team. You can expect a 40 hour working week with Saturday mornings on a rota basis with time off in lieu and no on call.

We are a busy and well respected single site practice with a good local reputation – we get a lot of new clients via word of mouth. We even have a good track record of turning clients into colleagues – recruiting some of our best clients to be part of our team! We are well equipped with (recently upgraded!) digital x-ray equipment including dental, Idexx blood machines, ultrasound, separate dog and cat wards and a dedicated nurse consulting room. We are proud to be an ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic, which is important to us as minimising stress for our patients is so vital. We are located in Hatfield, Hertfordshire which has swift mainline train links to London and is conveniently placed for both the A1(M) and the M25. There is onsite parking and close local amenities such as restaurants & an ALDI supermarket.

We have a lovely team of full and part time staff and you will be sharing management responsibilities with our Clinical Director and Practice Manager. We are a Training Practice and are really invested in the development of our own SVNs as well as vet students on EMS as this is so important for the future of the profession. A number of our staff have outside interests in various animal charities and volunteer or raise funds for them, such as Street Vet, the RSPCA, Cats Protection and London Colney Hedgehog Rescue. We also participate in the C4 neutering scheme for cats. One of our vets has a special interest in exotics, so you can expect to work with some interesting species at times! Our ethos is to provide tailored clinical care to our patients while also encompassing empathetic and personalised care to our clients in a friendly and fun working environment.

Applicant Requirements

The successful candidate will be an experienced RVN who either has previous Head Nurse experience or who is keen to develop their career in this direction by taking on more management responsibilities. As a team leader, you must be prepared to deal with some of the trickier aspects of general practice including managing challenging clients and situations. In keeping with the rest of the team, we need you to encourage the practice forwards through challenging times such as those we have recently experienced with the Covid pandemic, while maintaining a positive approach and the supportive working environment that we currently enjoy. Leading by example, empathy with clients, patients and staff and a sense of fairness are attributes that we will be looking for in the successful candidate. You won’t be alone and will be supported by our Clinical Director and Practice Manager along with the rest of the team – we are all rooting for you to succeed as the practice and the people in it mean a lot to us!
