Salary: £23,500

Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced Support Worker to join the Reducing Re-offending function at HMP & YOI Doncaster. Reporting into the Families First Manager, your duties will include providing a bespoke support service for prisoners and their families, through the provision of family support and third sector agency referrals, that enable prisoners and their families to maintain and improve their relationships, especially when approaching release.

 

As Family Support Worker, you will liaise with third sector agencies to arrange advice and support for families coming through the outside community centre and provide a drop-in service for families. You will liaise with prisoners on the residential units, offering advice & support, ensuring a referral link is in place. A key part of your role will include providing appropriate support mechanisms for families in the Families First Community Centre. You will work closely with the families who are experiencing challenging situations/circumstances, and you will encourage them to have increased aspirations, with view to achieve positive outcomes for both family and prisoner. Other key activities will include:

 

  • Developing links with and utilise the resources of the community and maintaining positive working relationships with a range of groups.

  • Maintain and develop ‘through the gate’ services with 3rd sector agencies, to support prisoners and their families on release back into the community.

  • Attending external conferences and meetings relevant to remain conversant with all aspects of prisoner family initiatives.

 

What you will need to do the role:

 

To carry out this role successfully, you will need to have a good knowledge of the legislation affecting adults and young offenders, children’s act and community care legislation as well as Resettlement/Outreach knowledge supporting vulnerable prisoners & families, and also knowledge & understanding of Risk Escalation. You must have experience of working within a busy office as there will be some day to day administration involved within the role. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are a key part of the role, with the ability to liaise and negotiate at all levels.

 

We are looking for someone with a good standard of education including English & Maths and an understanding of the Criminal Justice System. Ideally a degree in Criminal Justice or Psychology would be desirable and beneficial to the role however, this is not essential. You will have PPTLS or relevant equivalent teaching qualification/be willing to work towards.
