Main Purpose of Job

This job will be undertaken as a Modern Apprenticeship and so it is recognised that the post-holder will be undertaking appropriate in-house and external training and development.

The primary purpose will be to assist under supervision with all work undertaken by the Estates Electrical Team, providing a safe and efficient electrical service throughout the Institute.

Main duties of post holder

To undertake training both internally and externally and learn practical skills required to successfully gain modern apprenticeship.

To receive training in all aspects of the work required to be undertaken by the electrical department including:

  • Carrying out all types of electrical installation work.
  • Repairing electrical equipment and systems within the Institute.
  • Fault finding on equipment, systems or installations as and when required.
  • Overseeing contractors to ensure PAT and fixed wiring testing is up to date and documented.
  • To understand and comply with health and safety regulations, the James Hutton Institute Health & Safety policy and specialist safety procedures appropriate to electrical and maintenance work.
  • Any other duties as required.
  • Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge


  • National 5 Mathematics and English or equivalent 
  • An interest in electrical systems
  • Computer Literate
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to participate in the Modern Apprenticeship Programme
  • Interest in electrical work
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Desirable

  • Higher English and Mathematics or equivalent 
  • Some experience of undertaking electrical work
  • Have undertaken related courses at school/ college
