The Met Office is recruiting for one Level 3 Digital Support Technician apprentice nominally based in Exeter HQ but we will consider applicants wishing to work elsewhere within the UK.

  • This post is for a fixed term period of up to 16 months and is part of a formal apprenticeship programme. The role will entail managing the delivery of products and services to customers via numerous channels, technical investigations and problem solving and providing a level of support to internal Service Managers. For the apprentice, it provides a superb opportunity to understand the complexities and scope of an IT organisation who are customer focused and delivering services via a sales order process. It will provide an excellent exposure to the broad range of IT infrastructure we use at the Met Office, such as networks, server, software development, whilst working in a customer services framework.

    When would the apprenticeship start and how does it work?

    We would look for you to join us in September with your apprenticeship beginning later that month with Achievement Training. Working hours are typically 9am – 5pm and you would have 1 day per week dedicated to your 20% off-the-job training. Working towards the Level 3 Digital Support Technician apprenticeship, the training will be initially delivered online as well as self-study, and could include face to face training, so candidates need to have a passion for their own development as well as be committed to the training and opportunities available. You will be managed by one line manager and have one mentor to offer further support. In addition to the formal training with a registered training provider, you will also have in house training and on the job experience.

    As our Level 3 Digital Support apprentice, the key duties are:

  • Undertake and successfully complete formal training course throughout the duration of the apprenticeship ensuring requirements are met.
  • Be able to demonstrate the skills learnt as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team, undertaking tasks as instructed and increasingly contribute to the team.
  • Maintain a logbook and portfolio over the duration of the apprenticeship recording projects that have been undertaken to demonstrate the learning completed.
  • Be able to demonstrate good time management, for example adapting to changes in task priority at short notice.
  • What skills are required?

    Essential criteria – We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C (9-4) or equivalent including English and Maths at grade B/C (6) or above
  • Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Is able to plan and organise work using own initiative yet work collaboratively with a team
  • Has good problem-solving skills and a strong customer focus
  • Demonstrates a passion for wanting to work in IT

  • Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or another funded further education or higher education programme at the time you start this apprenticeship
  • Are applying for an apprenticeship that is unrelated to any qualifications you already hold at the same or higher level than this apprenticeship
