This is an exciting consultant post in general adult psychiatry with a dynamic liaison team at Croydon University Hospital (CUH). The role is full-time with 7 DCC and 3 SPA sessions and has arisen due to an expansion in the service, including the planned pilot of a new 4-bed Clinical Assessment Unit for mental health patients. The service comprises around 30 clinical staff and operates 24hrs/day seeing 40-50 patients per week, around 80% of whom are referred from the ED with the rest referred from the inpatient medical and surgical services.

This post will be the third consultant in the team, which is also supported by five junior medical trainees. It includes a rare opportunity to allocate two SPAs towards an academic affiliate programme at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London (KCL). The affiliate programme is optional and is for consultants who are keen to gain experience in academic research. Successful candidates who choose to take up the programme will have an honorary contract with KCL in addition to their substantive SLAM contract.

Croydon hospital is in the midst of a phased refurbishment, with the new ED completed in 2019 and a new Child Health Wing under construction. The liaison team is based in a modern purpose-built centrally air-conditioned office suite with a mix of private and open plan spaces on the first floor, which also benefits from being an exhibition space for Olivier Richon’s photography. There is a new staff shuttle bus service running between central Croydon and CUH which runs on weekday mornings and evenings and can be booked online. There is also subsidized staff parking at the NCP car park on Wellesley Road for staff who may wish to park and ride.
