Conservation, Access and Recreation Manager (maternity cover)

The role

Within our talented CAR team, we are committed to meeting our responsibilities to conserve and enhance wildlife and heritage, in addition to providing high-quality public access opportunities in our environmentally and archeologically rich region. As part of Wessex Water’s Estates team, we work together to drive great solutions for our customers and the environment on the company’s operational and tenanted portfolio.

Reporting to the Head of Estates an opportunity has arisen to work alongside another CAR Manager as fixed term maternity cover on a regional/specialism basis. You will be responsible for the delivery of Wessex Water’s duties under the Water Industry CAR Code of Practice while complying with statutory and regulatory drivers. The role is diverse and will involve all aspects of delivering CAR land management and the provision of advice to the business.

You will be responsible for the delivery of our SSSI land management and improvement commitments, implementation and delivery of our public safety framework, and production and implementation of management plans for public nature reserves and operational sites. This will include setting and managing budgets.

Day to day you will be responsible for the provision of advice to a diverse section of the business for the identification, implementation, promotion and forward planning of CAR and biodiversity activities. The role also requires surveying, managing and monitoring to conserve and enhance habitats and species of conservation importance, as well as managing contractors undertaking specialist surveys, management and works on our landholdings. You will work with volunteers and special interest groups to facilitate recording and conservation management on our landholding.

What are we looking for?

To be successful in this role, you will hold a degree or equivalent in biological sciences, environmental management or a related discipline and will have a proven track record of at least five years’ post-graduate experience of environmental project work and habitat management. A history of managing sites with public access will also be beneficial.

A candidate with a sound general knowledge of UK biodiversity is required. Strong botanical and habitat identification skills are essential and recording skills in a second discipline are desirable. The majority of the team’s focus is on terrestrial habitats, but knowledge and experience of managing inland freshwater habitats would also be beneficial.

You will be a confident and able communicator, positive and forward thinking, with a flexible approach to problem solving and achieving solutions. Good IT skills, including a knowledge of Arc GIS, Microsoft Excel and Word is essential for this role, as is the ability to deliver and report on projects within specified budget and time constraints, both independently and as part of a team.
