Job description

The Cloud Division, as part of Digital Services and Technology directorate (DST), are delivering complex products and services built collaboratively across multi-disciplined teams

We are looking for a Cloud Engineer with proven experience in either Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform to come and join our Cloud Services and Support Team. You will be working alongside the existing Cloud Infrastructure and Architecture teams and Information Assurance to ensure that the Office for National Statistics cloud deployments are fit for purpose and use. Using agile methods in a DevSecOps culture to deliver new services and business as usual in a true multi-cloud environment. You will be proficient in a wide range of technical areas, enjoy working openly and across DST, playing a pivotal role within the business.

Any experience in the following technologies would be of benefit:

•Serverless Technologies (e.g. Kubernetes/Docker etc)
•Networking/Firewalls/Security using cloud technologies
•Service Desk technologies (e.g. ServiceNow)
•Knowledge of Automation/DevOps tools (eg: Python, Terraform etc)

Responsibilities of a Cloud Engineer include but aren’t limited to:

• The ability to define, build, operate and support to continually improving and govern cloud services products and platforms to serve a variety of user needs.

• Managing incidents, requests, changes and problems.

• Managing the configuration, availability, capacity, performance and cost.

• Drive continuous improvement activities.

• Maximise the use of tools and technologies to deliver operational excellence.

• Active participation in wider communities of practice, identifying good practices we can adopt and sharing our experiences.

• Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques and collaborating to improve the capability of the team.

Essential Criteria

• Supports, designs and implements infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open source
packages and solutions, virtual and cloud

• Takes ownership of and proactively resolves technical problems. Identifying and diagnosing root causes across various platforms and technologies such as IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. Takes full accountability
for actions taken and decisions made.

• Has lateral thinking capability to dissect a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution. Able to troubleshoot and identify problems across different
technology capabilities including compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open source packages and solutions, virtual and cloud including
IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.

• Maintains focus on the whole life of service delivery – designs, develops, delivers and operates. Ensures that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service.

• Has an awareness of agile methodology and the ways you could apply the principles in practice. Able to take an open-minded approach and understands why iteration is important and can do it quickly.

    Selection process details

    Application stage will be based on your CV and personal statement. Your CV should be tailored to demonstrate any skills, knowledge and experience that are relevant to the person specification, and the essential criteria. As the criteria are scored, we would recommend that you give clear examples for each including the impact of your actions.

    As this role is at a variable grade HEO/SEO all applications will be sifted against the lower HEO criteria, should you reach the interview stage you will be assessed against all grades and offered the highest grade at which you pass the interview process.
