Here at Serco we have an opportunity for a Catering Assistant to join the Catering team at Yarls Wood Immigration Removal Centre. You will assist the Head Chefs and Chefs in the delivery of catering services to the establishment by preparing and cooking varied and healthy menus for detainees and demonstrate commitment to working as part of the Yarl’s Wood IRC Team in support of the Centre Vision and delivery of the Contract.


You will ensure all Health and Safety; Food Hygiene Regulations and Company Policies are adhered to and perform Quality Checks on serveries. You will also provide hospitality requirements when requested.


You will need to possess strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills along with good oral and written skills in order to fulfil this position and act as a positive role model to all residents, treating all with respect and decency. 


The role requires the post holder to work a shift pattern of 7am till 7pm, 3 days on 3 days off (regular weekends off).


What you need to do the role


You must have been resident in the UK continually for the last 5 years without any gaps and due to the nature of this role there is a requirement for a DBS check, security clearance, and/or other role specific pre-employment checks.


You will need experience of working in a high-pressured catering operation and within tight deadlines. Additional experience required as below:


  • Food Safety level 2 or 3
  • Awareness of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)
  • Awareness of allergen control within catering 
  • Basic computer skills including knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook applications.
  • Basic understanding of risk and conflict management.
