Working for our organisation
The Department of General Surgery is divided into four firms:
The Department is busy, with both emergency and elective work. There is a strong bias towards Day Surgery, with over 80% of patients being treated as day stay cases. There is a dedicated Day Stay Unit comprising three theatres and the Endoscopy Unit (3 suites). The Main Theatre block of 6 theatres includes a fully equipped OR1 laparoscopic theatre. Theatres are supported by the Surgical Centre where most patients are received on the day of their operation and from where the majority are discharged the same day.
Laparoscopic surgery is a particular interest within the Department. The trust invests in high quality laparoscopic equipment to ensure optimal surgical outcomes.
The Trust currently has one of the largest regional bariatric units which takes referrals from across the south east. The colorectal service includes cancer work, IBD and complex fistula, anal neoplasia and pelvic floor.
