Principal Java Engineer

Position Summary
We are looking for a Principal Java Engineer with over seven years’ commercial experience to work on various software projects, you would be helping us improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures.

Key Responsibilities

• Work in a multidisciplinary team collaborating with Delivery Managers, User Researchers, Test Engineers and Technical Architects to ensure projects are delivered in a timely manner, the deliverables meet the customer requirements and conform to the QA standards. Manage team of developers for on time project delivery

• Work closely with the Service Operations team to maintain live services, contribute towards growth of the contracts and ensure service requests are handled within the SLAs defined in the maintenance contracts

• Technically lead, support and mentor less experienced members of the team

• Work closely with the Business Growth community to understand client needs, analyse complex requirements and support the creation of a commercially viable technical solution using appropriate technologies. Contribute to the proposed solution architecture, high level programme for implementing, estimated cost and risk/mitigation of the solution

• Take ownership and responsibility of the technical task/solution through the delivery life cycle

• Advocate continuous improvement through effective retrospectives, recommendations and driving change

Essential technical skills

• Java (11+) • Database development (SQL and/or NoSQL such as MongoDB)

• Spring Framework (e.g. Spring Boot and plugins)

• Web app development framework (e.g. Angular)

• REST

• Testing frameworks (e.g. Junit, Cucumber, Selenium)

• Experience of the full software development lifecycle

• Experience of source version control ideally Git

• Experience of Agile methodologies

• Experience of developing to GDS standards

• Continuous Integration (e.g. Jenkins, Maven)

• Sounds knowledge of cyber security

• Experience of Azure services

• Containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes)

• Micro Services Architecture Desirable technical skills

• Experience of CCTV incl. media streaming in Java

• Understanding of networking

• ITIL Foundation Certificate

• Certified Scrum Master Personal Attributes

• Methodical approach to problem solving

• Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to successfully deliver business objectives

• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

• Positive, strong and robust work ethic, taking pride in professionalism, responsibility and highly proactive approach to work

• Effective leadership and teamworking skills within the software team and in cross functional project teams

• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage priorities and work to deadlines
