Main duties of the job

To take a leadership role in the nursing team having particular supervisory responsibilities for a designated group of qualified Staff Nurses and Health Care Support Workers.

To have a lead in specialised areas which may include Safeguarding, Child Protection, or Therapies (including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or Systemic Family Therapy.)

To regularly take charge of the unit in the absence of the unit nurse manager.

To regularly provide nursing support for the staff on duty on the unit, being available either for advice or to take charge when situations demand.

To provide individualised nursing care for young people who have severe mental health problems by having a Case Manager role.

To work closely and in conjunction with the young persons Care Coordinator to ensure transition is seamless.

To be an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team in the provision of comprehensive treatment packages.

To take an active role in the provision of a safe therapeutic environment. 

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • Must be first level registered Mental Health Nurse, Paediatric Nurse, or Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities

  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Post registration qualification in Child and Adolescent Mental Health
  • Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in an in-patient mental health setting.
  • Significant experience of working with young people or adults who have recently transitioned from CAMHS to adult services.
  • Experience of Care Coordination/ Case management

  • Experience of working in in-patient or community CAMHS
  • Evidence of continuing professional development relating to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nursing

  • Ability to generate effective therapeutic relationships with young people (patients)
  • A clear understanding of the nursing process and the Mental Health Measures and how they relate to children and young people with mental health problems
  • Ability to communicate with multi-disciplinary team colleagues and other professionals, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to be assertive and to take a leadership role in teams
  • Sound knowledge of child development and factors that are likely to contribute to mental health difficulties in children and young people who have mental health problems
  • Experience of service evaluation and audit and a good knowledge of the components of clinical governance
  • Sound knowledge of issues affecting the nursing of young people with mental health problems
  • Ability to assess mental health problems. This requires the ability to use information gathered from a variety of sources to provide a formulation of a mental health problem.
  • Ability to assess and manage risk, in particular being able to identify risk factors relating to mental health problems in young people and to implement appropriate risk management strategies.
