Main duties of the job

The Psychiatric Liaison Team provides an assessment service to the District General Hospital (D.G.H) and Emergency Department (E.D) for people who present following episodes of self harm, suicide attempts and other mental health related issues.

The post holder will provide comprehensive mental health assessments, signposting and follow-up arrangements.

The post holder will triage individuals accessing the E.D for mental health issues and illnesses; assess risk and prioritise intervention and assessment to facilitate the appropriate timely response. This has significant benefits for patients presenting to the ED by reducing waiting times, streamlining transition through the department and improving follow-up. In order the support this process the post holder will have excellent knowledge of primary and secondary mental health and substance misuse services as well as community and tertiary services. 

The post requires a high level of ability in carrying out psychosocial assessments, risk assessments and formulating safe and effective discharge and follow up plans. This is inclusive of the use of assessment tools, crisis intervention, referral to community resources, short term liaison follow-up clinics, and education to individuals, family, staff and general public.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualification and Experience

Essential criteria

  • RMN and registered with the NMC Registered Social Worker (RSW) Professional qualification in Social Work. CQSW/DipSW with experience in working with adult mental health
  • Knowledge of mental health issues related to self-harm Knowledge of the Mental health Act 1983
  • Knowledge of the Mental health Act 1983
  • knowledge and understanding of assessing and managing patients with suspected cognitive impairment
  • Desirable criteria

  • Welsh language desirable
  • good knowledge of evidence based assessment tools
  • V300 Independent Supplementary prescribing qualification, or willingness to undertake L6 7 course to achieve qualification
  • Awareness of the WARRN risk assessment tool

    Essential criteria

  • Suitable experience at band 5 or 6 RMN or equivalent for social worker
  • relevant experience within field of adult mental health
