The Post holder will be an effective member of the maternity multidisciplinary team working under the supervision and guidance of registered midwives and other health professionals.

The post holder will assist the parents, registered midwives and paediatricians to provide holistic care for babies and parents within maternity services. The post holder will also provide planned transitional care- including care for unwell babies.

The post holder will have a key role in supporting and educating parents during the early transition period.

Main duties of the job

An opportunity has arisen to come and work with our forward thinking, award winning team within the maternity services at the University Hospital Sussex at the Royal Sussex County Hospital site. We support approximately 5,000 births per year across the Royal Sussex County Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital, and have an exceptional home birth service. 

We are now recruiting for the position of  Nursery Nurse  to work with our motivated team. This will be a rotational post working in all areas in maternity including the Delivery Suite Theatre, Postnatal Ward and Antenatal Department. We welcome applications from both newly qualified and experienced Nursery Nurse Practitioners  with appropriate qualifications .

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient Care Delivery

General Baby Care

  • On a daily basis provide care for the babies including feeding, nappy changing, eye care, Cord Clamp removal.
  • Perform daily physical checks of babies and document findings/care into the digital baby care record. Report any concerns to the midwife in charge.
  • b) Transitional/Clinical Baby Care
  • Record basic observation such as temperature, pulse and respiration as required.
  • Closely monitor and care of babies on Meconium observations including temperature, pulse and respiration. Reporting any changes to doctor/midwife.
  • Take blood via heel prick to perform blood sugar monitoring and report results.
  • Care of baby undergoing phototherapy e.g. bilibeds.
  • Care of cold babies and monitoring temperature whilst under overhead radiant heater or hot cot.
  • Using of a SATS monitor.
  • Undertake the collection of specimens such as blood by heel prick and urine samples and swabs.
  • Removal of venflons.
  • Care of babies with special needs i.e. congenital abnormalities such as babies with a cleft palate needing specialist feeding and babies undergoing drug withdrawal.
