Main duties of the job

We perform an extensive range of respiratory physiology tests, have a large sleep service, and a large CPET service currently performing 366 test per year (before Covid) with agreed plans for expansion. The post holder will be required to assist in the delivery of lung function tests, provocation tests, respiratory muscle investigations and other investigations, as well as contributing to the further development of the CPET service, and will work towards completion of the ARTP practitioner level III qualification and becoming proficient in performing CPET.

The successful applicant must be able to work using their own initiative as well as be a team player, have good communication skills combined with a pleasant outgoing manner. Computer knowledge is essential including all windows applications (Word/Access/PowerPoint/Excel) and working with databases and specialist software.

Working closely with technical, medical and administrative staff, you will ensure patient confidentiality, comfort and safety at all times.

Essential criteria

  • An undergraduate degree in clinical physiology or Healthcare Science (Respiratory and Sleep Physiology) or science related subject.
  • BLS Resuscitation Council (UK) certificate.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications.
  • RCCP/HCPC registration or working towards.
  • ILS or ALS Resuscitation Council (UK) certificate.
  • SCST certificate in electrocardiography.
  • ARTP Part I & 2 qualification or ARTP Practitioner (Level 3) qualification.
  • ARTP overnight pulse oximetry and polygraphy practitioner certificate.
  • Completion of specific modules of the AASM accredited sleep technologist education programme (A-STEP).
  • Training/assessors qualification or certificate.

  • Ability to adapt to changeable day to day service needs including unpredictable work patterns, unforeseen staff absence, urgent clinical referrals, incidents and complaints, equipment faults/issues, and helping to meet administrative deadlines.
  • Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time undertaking complex tasks on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work with and provide emotional support where needed with patients who may have life limiting conditions.
