Job Summary/ Support Provided

This is a position joining a team who are providing 24/7 care and support to Ms P. The team work on a rota pattern of shifts providing day time one to one support and waking night team is made up of a mix of full and part time staff and there are be designated waking night staff. The team is led by a Team Leader who also works as a support worker and provides the team with day to day leadership and management support. The team also have relief staff who have no contracted hours and provide cover as and when required.

Current Vacancy

At the present time there are vacancies on the team for a part-time support worker (around 30 hours per week daytime) and additional hours to cover current shift pattern is early to, late to , (waking nights to not required at present)

About Ms P

Ms P is a woman in her early 30s who suffered a very serious brain injury when she was involved in a road traffic accident in .

She has recently moved to a new purposefully adapted bungalow in the community after a long period in hospital and rehabilitation facilities following her is now enjoying getting on with her life and living more independently.

Ms P is a full-time wheelchair user and requires assistance from 1 for all transfers.

Ms P is an animal lover and has 2 cats.

Ms P has a long-term stays over 1 night each week.

Key Roles and Responsibilities of the Position

Support with Behaviour – Ms P displays some challenging behaviours, consistent with her brain injury. Such behaviours include reduced social awareness, disinhibited behaviour, non-compliance, irritability, reduced insight and impulsivity. She can be prone to episodes of shouting or being requires assistance to manage her behaviours and there is the expectation that staff will both model and promote appropriate social behaviour and communication, and use psychology recommended strategies, as well as intervene to maintain her safety if need to be resilient enough not to take these episodes personally, and be able to remain calm.

Assist with all aspects of personal care including washing, dressing, hair, makeup and some intimate care.

Assist with toileting and management of night time urinary incontinence and toileting programme at night of bedpan use.

Assistance with all transfers and mobility. Ms P requires assistance with all transfers. She relies on her wheelchair for functional mobility and is able to self-propel her wheelchair for indoor mobility. She requires assistance of one for all aspects of outdoor mobility. She has a powered wheelchair for outdoor use and support workers are required to manage this and support both Ms P driving it and also having control of it P is able to mobilise a short distance with assistance and the support of her specialist indoor walking frame. She continues to present as being at high risk of falls due to her reduced balance, coordination and safety awareness .

Meal and drink preparation of all meals, drinks and addition, Ms P is encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle through healthy eating and meal will include assisting Ms P with her shopping.

Domestic support Ms Ps household, including housework, washing, ironing and garden maintenance, will need to be maintained.

Finances Ms P requires support to manage her finances and there is a household expenditure account and petty cash that is managed by staff.

Support with reduced motivation and fatigue Ms P can struggle to remain motivated and engaged in personal, social and leisure activities. Regular prompting and encouragement are required to maintain her engagement.Furthermore, Ms P experiences fatigue thus support is required to manage her fatigue effectively whilst applying energy conservation techniques.

Support Ms P to access leisure, recreation & social activities in the community- Ms P enjoys going out for day trips.

Provide advice and guidance on smoking cannabis Ms P and her partner are smokers of both cigarettes and smoke outdoors or in a designated smoking shed. This can have a detrimental effect on Ms. P and her engagement with activities, and staff offer advice in attempts to help her remain in control of her smoking.

Drive Ms Ps wheelchair accessible vehicle

Carry out rehabilitation programmes set by Physiotherapy, Psychology and Occupational Therapy following her move to her new home.

Night time care is provided on a waking night basis with staff available to support Ms P with personal care, toileting and issues as they arise and other domestic duties as indicated in the care plan.
